CCG Homes was delighted to be present at the grand opening of Pigeon Park – a new addition to the ongoing regeneration of Dalmarnock in Glasgow’s East End, located just a short walk from our brand-new development, ‘Dalmarnock Quarter’.
The £1.05m project, comprising a high-quality play area, community planters, green space and seating areas, was delivered through Glasgow City Council’s Vacant Derelict Land Fund and Clyde Gateway, with over £70,000 contributed by the CCG Group through the delivery of the 173-home mixed-tenure regeneration of French Street, of which Dalmarnock Quarter forms a major part alongside much-needed affordable homes from Thenue Housing Association.
The park’s name was chosen through a public poll after local primary school pupils submitted suggestions.
The winning entry came from a pupil at Riverbank Primary School in Dalmarnock, who put forward the name as an affectionate nod to the pigeons that roost in neighbouring Dalmarnock Train Station.
Team Scotland Commonwealth Games gymnast Pavel Karnejenko took part in a ceremony with local councillors and pupils from primary schools in the area.
Pupils were ecstatic to see the name unveiled – and to meet the park’s larger-than-life pigeon mascot, who surprised the winning school with a cheque for £1,000 from Clyde Gateway. Runner-up schools in the naming contest – St Anne’s and Dalmarnock Primary- were also awarded £500.
Councillor Richard Bell, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “I think [Pigeon Park] is a fantastic name and it’s very local to the area. The young folk have been saying that every time they come to Dalmarnock, they see loads of pigeons on the train station roof.
“There always needs to be things for young people to do. And to be able to go to a green space like this, where you’ve got lots of play activity but greenery as well… It’s fantastic.”
Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway, Martin McKay, added: “The best thing about the name is that it’s been selected by the local community. Pigeon Park is really unique, and it’s a very, very Glasgow thing, so it’s absolutely brilliant.
“I’m always immensely proud when we get to open something new and something exciting, but something that’s been shaped by the local community makes it even better.”
